We were finally getting ready to recycle our lawn sign when we thought..."Hey! We could use this!" So my husband used the metal stand to roll and weld the rings we head the drum with and I used the plastic sign to wrap them. Now we have what we call the Obama drum.

New Ashiko

I was finally was able to eek out one lonely little drum. It's a good one though!

These are the smallest drums we make and are great for travelling or kids. They creat a surprising amount of sound and despite the size give off a good bit of bass.

I'm Still Here

Wow has it been awhile since I've written anything here. Ahhhhh life.

I will soon be heading back out to make more drums and shakers but in the meantime....

Last summer I bought some plastic egg shakers to sell at various shows that did not require everything to be hand made. Well I ended up hanging onto quite a few (Ahhhhh the economy). So how to make them "handmade" in order to list them on Etsy and sell them at the upcoming Eugene Saturday Market? Crochet, crochet. I've just started but hope to let my imagination run wild.

A Good Day

I had a wonderful day yesterday. Nothing too special about it but my new shop ( http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6255486 ) had only been open for 1 week on Etsy and I made the front page!

In my shop where I make ashiko drums, I try my hardest to use scavenged and recycled woods. I also try to use up every scrap of wood in some way so nothing goes to waste. I had been pondering what to do with all the tiny bits left over from making shakers. Here is what I came up with and I have been having a wonderful time doing it!

New and Unique Ashiko Drums

I recently created a new batch of drums, and although each one is slightly different and unique in its own way, I was particularly excited about a couple of them.

The first is this eye catching 18" ashiko. It is made with recycled flooring and has a variety of woods including oak, maple, tigerwood, ipe, walnut, and hickory. The wood itself is beautiful but what really makes this one stand out is the head. My friend Anne who does my tie dyes for me created this head awhile ago and it just sat in my back room waiting to become a drum. It's silly but I just couldn't find inspiration in the pattern so it waited and waited......sad little drum head.

I originally headed this drum with another tie dye head but there was a weak spot in it and a small rip developed. So off with its head! I grabbed the first tie dye I saw to replace it and it was this colorful one you see here. Great job Anne! It really makes the drum. I love it!

The second ashiko is our standard size of 24" and has a fish skin on it. We get these skins occasionally but not as often as we like. It is a much thinner head than a goat skin and has its own unique tone to it. This is a wonderful sounding drum!

Again the wood is a variety of recycled flooring with great dark and light tones throughout. Ooooooohhhh shiny.

There are some drums I have had for awhile and though there is nothing wrong with them I am dropping the prices today!!!! Two reasons for this:

One: I need to make room for my next big batch of drums and

Two: If I sell one today I will not have to go vend at my local market tomorrow in 100 DEGREE WEATHER!!!!

I love my market but wow would I rather stay home in a cooler environment.
So what do you say. Want to give a drum it's forever home?

summer life

It has been a crazy whirlwind of a summer so far. I have traveled, been on a cruise, gone to a wedding, seen my newborn nephew, vended my drums, have had deaths in my family, am looking forward to another new nephew, finally got to go fishing and now sit here with a pulled muscle in my neck. At least I think that's what has happened so far. I am still reeling. It seems that the whole rest of my summer is planned out as well and even up to the holiday season toward the end of the year. But I must focus on one project at a time. So here is the next great adventure for me.

This Friday, July 18th, some wonderful Eugene artists and I, in coordination with Oregon Community Credit Union, will display our handcrafted items at an outdoor event to benefit Relay For Life. My New Nephew

I just got back from out East where I got to visit my nephew Andrew. For my parents, he is the first grand child and therefore my first nephew. It was amazing to meet and hold him. I didn't want to put him down. Can't wait to visit again but in the meantime I have some great pics to look at.

Custom drum order

I have been making drums for awhile now and still love what I do. I get really excited, however when I get to try something new or different. I was asked by a guy who had purchased from me in the past if I could somehow honor the hiking trip his son took in the form of a drum. The ideas started flowing from each of us....inlays, colors, woods.....but we finally settled on the idea of the map drawn on the head of the drum. I had done art on drum heads before but never to this extent. I think it turned out pretty well and I had a lot of fun in the process. A new door opens for me in the custom made drum world.

Tuning your Drum

I was finally able to vend at my local market this weekend and it was a beautiful day. The sun was out and many people came to enjoy all the wonderful crafts, foods, and music. About this time every year I notice that a lot of people end up seeking me out or calling me to find out how to tune up their ashiko or djembe. Those beloved drums that have been sitting and waiting for the warmer weather that indicates the start of the outside drum circle season. Maybe they have been tapped on occasionally but for the most part have been gathering some cobwebs. So here it is.....the play by play on how to tune your drum. This can be used on any drum that is headed with the rope tuning system. And please note that these instructions are moving from right to left but your drum may tune from left to right. Just apply the same steps moving in the opposite direction.

Step One
Take your lead rope and cross over the next two vertical ropes that have not been crossed

Step Two
Go under one rope with your lead rope

Step Three
Go over the second rope with your lead

Step Four
Go back under both ropes with the lead rope

Step Five
Push the woven lead rope down as far as you can

Step Six
Pull the lead rope until the vertical ropes cross each other
Continue steps one through six until your drum sounds how you want. The more ropes you cross the higher pitched your drum will be.

Earth Day on Etsy

As you may know, Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day. But also, as you may have heard.....every day is Earth Day. So I wanted to feature some items from Etsy that really capture the spirit of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Here are just a few of the wonderful things I found.

It's that time of year

Last weekend was the opener for the Eugene Saturday Market. I, unfortunately was sick and couldn't make it. So I am really looking forward to this Saturday ( April 12th ) to participate once again in the oldest open air market in the states.

This will be my fourth summer as a member of the market and I am still "perfecting" my booth. I think back to my first day and can't believe how organized I thought I was. Have to just shake my head now.

It is supposed to be around 70 degrees and sunny this weekend so I urge you to come see all of the beautiful hand made items if you are in the Eugene area. Everything is handmade, the food is excellent, the music always gets your toes tapping, and it's easy to lose yourself in all the smiling faces.

The Rhythm of Etsy

I am new to this blogging thing and pretty new to Etsy. So far I have had a ton of fun meeting new people and making a couple sales here and there. There are a couple of other people I have found on Etsy that also sell drums but I am pretty unique as far as the style of drum I make and the small details that personalize my drums and make them one of a kind.

One example of this is the fact that much of the wood I use is recycled hardwood flooring. When people ask where I get this I tell them the magical recycled hardwood flooring store. The truth is I have made contacts through which I can purchase the wood and I am always on the lookout for piles of wood, construction sites, ads on craigslist and yes ....I am not afraid to admit it....dumpsters.

Another way my drums are a little different is the fact that I sometimes head them with tie dyed drum skins. When people ask me about this, I take joy in telling them the skin is from the very allusive Pacific Northwest Hippie Goat. You would be surprised at how many people just nod in agreement. Makes me smile.

I have been making drums for about ten years now and absolutely love it. I can't imagine doing anything else. So please take a look at my shop and stop back for more adventures in drum building. Thanks for reading.
